Marzee House

Near Beyond Pangong

Beyond the normal and touristic please lies a village far away from Civilization. MERAK Village.
Closed for Winter

With the cold chilly winds of the Changthang Desert, a picturesque hamlet called Merak, with settlement of about thirty houses is your answer to- ‘The Mountains are calling and i must answer’.Once the limited number of commercial establishments disappears,so do the roads and any sign of civilization. The PangongTso continues unhindered, cobalt tinged and majestic on one side with vast flat sand lands on the other often broken by the steady streams and rivers that join the lake from the glaciers at touching distance. The best part though is that the tourists are usually taken up to Spangmik -a point where they eat greasy noodles, stay the night at camps, hang around by the lake, take plenty of photos posing by the water and go back to Leh either the same day or the next.Fortunately for you, they don’t risk going any further leaving the roads less explored and more fun. This journey, backbreaking in its true sense is easily the most enchanting experience you would take in your life.Kilometers on end, there are no signs of any life.Just the snow, the water, the sand and ethereal peace!

Rooms with surreal view of Pangong Two is what Marzee House will give you. Be it getting up to the sun rays from the snow capped mountains or stargazing from your bedroom. Marzee House is a old mud contrasted house with three well lit rooms viewing the blue eternal lake. The kitchen is very tradition and showcased the the living of Chagpa people. As the house is made of mud, the room stays warm all day long.

Simple home cooked Ladakhi food is served. From tradition firewood Dal Chawal to Mom Mok. Please don’t expect any fancy food as this is not being served here. You can also participate in cooking and learn some recipes from Ladakh.

Marzee House is the perfect example how nomads used to live back in time when tourism didn’t hit Pangong Tso. Farming and livestock herding has been the livelihood for centuries in this village. Marzee house is a perfect example of traditional architecture of the region. The main attraction is of course Pangong Lake, This beautiful Himalayan lake Pangong Tso (Tibetan for “high grassland lake”) is situated at a height of about 14,270 ft and is 134 km long. It extends from India to China. The lake is 5 km wide at its broadest point.
If touristic doesn’t ignites fire in you then you can move far ahead towards Chusul side.

Pangong Tso is located approx 175 kms from Leh town across the Chang la pass. The route passes through Tangste and can be reached in about 5 hours.
